Accelerated BSW Programs and Combined BSW-to-MSW Tracks

Are There Accelerated BSW Programs That Lead Straight Into an MSW?

Yes. Accelerated BSW programs shorten the path to a social work career in three ways: a bachelor's finished in three years, a combined BSW-to-MSW track that earns both degrees in four or five years, or a transfer route that finishes the BSW in two years after an associate degree. Of the 78 programs compared here, 61 describe a combined track into the MSW, such as the University of Georgia's Double Dawgs pathway and Dordt University's three-year bachelor's plus a fourth-year MSW.

What Counts as an Accelerated BSW Program

Accelerated BSW programs are CSWE-accredited Bachelor of Social Work degrees built to get you into practice, or into a master’s, sooner than the usual four-plus-two years. This page compares 78 programs at 68 schools in 27 states, every one CSWE-accredited and checked on the school’s own site in October 2026.

“Accelerated” means one of three things, and schools use the word loosely:

  • A faster bachelor’s. Ball State University’s campus BSW takes four years, or three with year-round study. South Carolina State University’s takes four years, or three with relevant transfer credit.
  • A combined BSW-to-MSW track. You finish the BSW, then move straight into the same school’s advanced standing MSW. 61 of the 78 programs describe one, usually as a 4+1 (both degrees in five years) and occasionally as a 3+1 (both in four).
  • A transfer route. You arrive with an associate degree and finish the BSW in about two years. 36 of the programs describe a transfer pathway.

The biggest time saving usually comes from the MSW side. A CSWE-accredited BSW qualifies you to apply for advanced standing, which lets you skip the generalist content you already covered and finish many MSWs in about a year.

Who a Faster BSW Route Suits

A combined track or three-year plan works best if:

  • You already know you want an MSW. A combined track lets you plan both degrees from your first year instead of applying cold after graduation.
  • You can carry a heavy load. Three-year plans depend on summer terms and full semesters. Ball State’s three-year option requires year-round study.
  • You have strong grades. Combined tracks often set a GPA floor. Indiana University’s Accelerated Master’s Program asks for a 3.0, and Wayne State’s Accelerated Master’s Pathway asks for a 3.0 major GPA.
  • You’re transferring from a community college. 2+1 and 2+2 plans turn an associate degree into a BSW, and sometimes an MSW, quickly.

It suits you less if you’re unsure about social work or want room to explore. Some tracks expect an early decision: Pacific Union College’s MSW 4+1 asks you to apply to Loma Linda University in your junior year. And the BSW’s practicum year can’t be compressed.

What the 78 Programs Have in Common, in Numbers

Most accelerated options sit on campus: 61 programs list campus delivery, 20 online and 6 hybrid. 13 list a part-time plan, which helps if you’re combining a faster route with work.

Price varies more than structure. The 26 public universities have a median federal tuition and fees figure of $12,828 for a full-time year (2023-24, NCES College Navigator). The private colleges have a median of $36,842. At the low end, University of West Florida reports $6,360 and pairs its BSW with a 30-semester-hour, 12-month advanced standing MSW in Pensacola. At the high end, Fordham University reports $61,992, with a social work major completed in two years and a 31-credit advanced standing MSW that runs nine months full time.

Field hours run above the minimum at many of these schools. The median among the 26 programs that state their hours is 425.

Program facts come from each school's own pages, reviewed October 2026. Tuition is the program's own published rate where the school states one; otherwise it's the school's federal undergraduate tuition and fees for a full-time year, 2023-24 (in-state at public universities), from NCES College Navigator. "Resident rate" means the school charges nonresidents more. CSWE status comes from CSWE's directory of accredited programs.

Three Ways to Finish a BSW Faster

Three-year bachelor’s plans. Year-round study is the usual method. Ball State University offers three years with year-round study at a flat $4,474 per semester for Indiana residents (2026-27). Dordt University lets you earn the bachelor’s in three years and finish its MSW in the fourth.

2+1 and 3+1 pathways. University of Northern Iowa offers Social Work 2+1 for students who finish an AA before transferring, plus a 3+1 accelerated option, with articulated transfer plans at each Iowa community college. University of Pikeville runs a 2+1 pathway for associate degree holders (BSW, then MSW in one more year) and a 4+1. Saint Mary’s College describes a 3+1 that earns both degrees in four years.

Transfer-in finishes. Ohio State’s online BSSW is a degree completion format: a typical student entering with 60 credit hours takes about two years. Nazareth University lets associate degree holders start in August and finish the bachelor’s in two years with no summer courses. Barry University runs a 2+2 for associate degree holders.

If you’re still at a community college, the degree completion and transfer guide and the transfer finder go deeper.

BSW to MSW: How Combined Tracks Work

A combined track is a planned handoff from the BSW to the same school’s MSW. The wording differs by school, so read each one closely:

School Combined route, as the school describes it Advanced standing MSW
University of Georgia Double Dawgs: BSW and advanced standing MSW in five years 40 credit hours, three semesters (summer, fall, spring)
Hawaii Pacific University 4+1 for students with a B or higher in social work courses and a 3.0 final GPA 30 credits, 1 year (online)
Southern Connecticut State University BSW graduates may apply to the accelerated one-year MSW 33 credits, one calendar year full time or two academic years
University of Indianapolis 4+1 earns the BSW and MSW in five years 33 credits, 1 year, starting each summer
Grand View University 3+2: BSW and MSW in five total years Offered
Loyola University Chicago Majors may apply to the Advanced Standing MSW and finish both in five years 23 credit hours, 1 year
Colorado State University-Fort Collins 4+1 through the advanced standing MSW One calendar year (three semesters), starting mid-May

Admission to the MSW is never automatic. Even inside a 4+1, you apply, and schools like Hawaii Pacific set grade thresholds. Saint Leo University describes advanced standing for “students who excel.”

Advanced Standing Social Work Programs: What the Shortcut Saves

Advanced standing is the MSW’s answer to a BSW. CSWE’s 2022 standards require every accredited MSW program to offer advanced standing to graduates of CSWE-accredited bachelor’s programs, so you don’t repeat generalist content. CSWE also states that an accredited bachelor’s in social work is required to qualify. A psychology or sociology degree doesn’t count.

Advanced standing lengths and credit loads vary widely across schools with an MSW route:

School Advanced standing MSW Length and credits, as the school states them
Loyola University Chicago Social Work MSW (in person) 23 credit hours, 1 year
University of Southern California MSW, on campus and hybrid 24 units, 12 months
Azusa Pacific University MSW, Azusa and Inland Empire 10 months
Arkansas State University MSW Online 36 credit hours, as few as 12 months
Auburn University MSW, on campus 39 hours, three consecutive semesters full time
University of Alabama MSW, main campus 42 credit hours, three semesters full time, starting in summer

Many advanced standing years start in summer, as at Alabama, Georgia and Colorado State, so plan for a short break between degrees. Across all BSW schools on this site, 323 offer an MSW route. The BSW to MSW guide explains the whole route, and the route finder matches your BSW school to MSW options. For full MSW profiles, mswdegree.com lists each one, such as UGA’s full-time MSW.

Taking MSW Courses Before You Graduate

Some schools let strong undergraduates start the MSW early, which saves both time and tuition:

  • Indiana University lets BSW students with a 3.0 GPA take up to 12 MSW credits in their last two semesters at undergraduate tuition, and BSW graduates qualify for fast-track admission to its one-year MSW.
  • Wayne State University lets BSW students with a 3.0 major GPA apply around 75 credits and take courses that count toward both degrees at the undergraduate rate.
  • University of Louisville lets strong BSW students take up to 9 credits that count toward both degrees, feeding its 30-hour MSSW advanced standing program.
  • Spring Arbor University lets eligible students start graduate coursework as early as junior year, often at the undergraduate rate.

These options have GPA and timing rules, so look into them before your junior year.

The Practicum Doesn’t Speed Up

Every accredited BSW includes at least 400 hours of field education, and CSWE’s minimum for master’s programs is 900. Accelerated programs keep these hours. Several go well past the minimum:

In a three-year plan, the practicum year is usually your heaviest. At The University of Texas at El Paso, the senior placement runs 16 hours per week (240 hours per semester) in both semesters, on top of classes.

How to Choose an Accelerated BSW

  • Confirm the route is written down. A named 4+1, 3+1 or 2+1 with stated admission terms beats a general promise to “prepare graduates for accelerated MSW study.”
  • Check the GPA floor. 3.0 is common for early MSW credits (Indiana, Wayne State) and for 4+1 entry (Hawaii Pacific).
  • Compare advanced standing credits. 23 credit hours at Loyola and 42 at Alabama are both “one year,” but the course load differs.
  • Ask where the MSW is delivered. Some combined tracks feed an on-campus MSW (Colorado State’s Fort Collins MSW), others an online one (Hawaii Pacific).
  • Plan your summers. Ball State’s three-year option and many advanced standing MSWs start or run through summer.
  • Look at your state’s license. A BSW may lead to a bachelor’s-level license in your state before you start the MSW. The LBSW license guide covers each state.

Trade-Offs of the Fast Track

Speed versus flexibility. A 3+1 saves a year, but you commit to social work early and lose space for electives or a second major.

Same school versus best MSW. Staying put is simplest, but any CSWE-accredited BSW qualifies you for advanced standing anywhere. Compare a few MSWs before you lock in.

Private sticker price versus public resident rate. The private median here is $36,842 against $12,828 for publics. A public combined track like West Florida’s or Georgia’s keeps both degrees at public prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a 4+1 BSW to MSW Program?

A 4+1 plan pairs a four-year BSW with a one-year advanced standing MSW at the same school, so you finish both degrees in five years. Colorado State University-Fort Collins, Azusa Pacific University and Saint Leo University each describe a 4+1 route.

Can You Get a BSW and MSW in Four Years?

At a few schools. Saint Mary's College describes a 3+1 pathway that earns the BSW and MSW in four years, and Dordt University's accelerated program finishes the bachelor's in three years and its MSW in the fourth.

Is Advanced Standing Guaranteed With a BSW?

No. CSWE requires an accredited baccalaureate social work degree to qualify for advanced standing, but each MSW program sets its own admission criteria. Hawaii Pacific University, for example, asks for a B or higher in social work courses and a 3.0 final GPA for its 4+1 path.

Can I Do an Accelerated BSW Online?

Some. 20 of the 78 programs on this page are offered online, including Ohio State's online BSSW, which takes about two years for a typical student entering with 60 credit hours. The field practicum is still completed in person at an agency.

Does an Accelerated BSW Have Fewer Practicum Hours?

No. CSWE's 2022 standards set a minimum of 400 field education hours for every accredited bachelor's program, and the median among the 26 programs here that state their hours is 425.

How Many Credits Is an Advanced Standing MSW?

It varies by school. Loyola University Chicago lists 23 credit hours, the University of Southern California 24 units, many schools around 30 to 39 credits, and the University of Alabama 42 credit hours.
