BSW Admission Requirements: Getting Into the Social Work Major

What Are the Admission Requirements for a BSW Program?

BSW admission requirements usually come in two stages: you get into the university first, then apply to the social work major after one to two years of prerequisites. Of the 631 BSW options on this site, 396 state their admission rules, and the GPA minimums they publish run from 2.0 at Auburn University to 3.0 in social work courses at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. 199 programs name a transfer pathway, so community college credit often counts. Check any school's rules in its BSW program profile.

How BSW Admission Requirements Work: Two Doors, Not One

Getting into a Bachelor of Social Work program almost never happens on your college application alone. You apply to the university like any other freshman or transfer student. Then, after a set of prerequisite courses, you apply a second time to the social work major itself, often called the professional program or professional phase.

That second door is where the real BSW admission requirements sit. Of the 631 BSW options on this site, 396 publish their rules for entering the major. They tend to check four things:

  • Credit hours completed. The University of Alabama asks for 54 credit hours, the University of South Alabama 56, Jacksonville State University 48 and Auburn University at Montgomery 45.
  • A GPA floor, often two of them: one for all your college work and a higher one for your social work courses.
  • Gateway courses finished with a C or better, such as an introduction to social work and a human behavior or social welfare course.
  • An application packet: a personal statement, references, an interview or an advisor meeting.

Until you clear that second review, you are usually listed as a pre-social work or pre-professional major. You can take general education courses and the first social work classes, but not the upper-level practice courses or the field practicum.

What Real Schools Ask for, in Their Own Words

The rules vary more than most students expect. Here is how a set of schools phrase their entry requirements, taken from each program’s own page.

School and program When you apply GPA minimum Courses and other steps
University of Alabama BSW After 54 credit hours 2.25 overall, 2.50 social work Professional Program application
University of South Alabama BSW After 56 credit hours 2.60 USA GPA; 2.50 social work GPA to continue C or better in SW 200, SW 214 and SW 220
Jacksonville State University BSW After 48 semester hours 2.25 overall; 2.50 social work to continue MS 110, MS 204, C or better in SW 230, SW 390
UAB BSSW After most of the core curriculum 2.25 cumulative; 2.5 in four SW courses C or better in the core
Auburn University BASW Each semester (Dec. 1, Apr. 15, Aug. 1) 2.0 institutional, 2.5 social work C or better in SOCY 1000, SOWO 2000, SOWO 3910
Tuskegee University BSW Second semester of sophomore year 2.3 after 45+ credit hours Statement, two references, orientation, interview
Talladega College BASW After the sophomore year 2.5 on all college work C or better in SW 125, 231, 232; faculty interview
University of Arkansas BSW After ten prerequisite courses 2.5 across the prerequisites C or better in nine of the ten
University of Alaska Anchorage BSW October of the year before practicum 2.50 cumulative SWK A330 with C or better, advisor meeting

A few patterns stand out. Most of these programs set the overall GPA floor between 2.0 and 2.6, then hold social work courses to a slightly higher bar. Several also set a “to continue” rule, which means your grades are reviewed again after you are in. The University of Alaska Fairbanks, for example, requires a 3.0 GPA in social work program courses to advance to the practicum.

GPA Minimums: What the Numbers Mean for You

A published GPA minimum is a floor, not a promise. Meeting it makes you eligible to apply; it does not guarantee a seat, so aim above it.

Three things matter more than the headline number:

  • Which GPA counts. Auburn University looks at a 2.0 institutional GPA, which means only courses taken at Auburn. The University of South Alabama uses your USA GPA. Transfer grades may not count toward these at all, so your first semester on campus carries extra weight.
  • The social work GPA. Many programs compute a separate average for social work courses. A strong overall GPA will not cover a C-minus in an introductory social work class if the program requires a C or better.
  • The grade per course. Auburn University at Montgomery asks for a C or higher in SOWK 1000 but a C+ or higher in SOWK 2000 and SOWK 2220. Read the exact grade rule for each gateway course.

If your GPA is close to the line, take the gateway courses when you can give them your full attention, and meet the program’s advisor before you apply. The University of Alaska Anchorage builds that faculty advisor meeting into its requirements.

Prerequisite Courses You Will Take First

Before the major opens, you complete general education plus a short list of social work gateway courses. The names change by school, but the content repeats: an introduction to social work, a course in human behavior or diversity, and often social welfare history or policy.

Many programs also ask for courses from neighboring fields. Auburn University requires introductory sociology (SOCY 1000) along with its social work courses. Jacksonville State University requires two math courses, MS 110 and MS 204, before you can apply. The University of Arkansas sets ten prerequisite courses and asks for a 2.5 GPA across them.

These courses do two jobs. They prepare you for upper-level practice classes, and they let you test whether social work is the right fit before you commit to the professional sequence. The BSW curriculum guide walks through what comes after admission, from practice methods to the field practicum.

Deadlines and Timing: When to Apply to the Major

Most programs open the major application once a year or once a semester, and the dates are firm.

  • The University of Alabama’s online BSW takes applications by February 15 for fall or September 15 for spring.
  • Auburn University at Montgomery opens short windows: February 14-28 for fall or September 15-30 for spring.
  • The University of Arkansas at Little Rock asks for sophomore-year applications due March 15, 2027, with decisions in mid-May.
  • Auburn University reviews applications each semester, with deadlines of December 1, April 15 and August 1.

Missing a once-a-year window can delay your practicum by a full year, which can delay graduation. Put the date on your calendar as soon as you declare pre-social work. If you are planning around cost, a semester’s delay matters too; the BSW cost guide breaks down tuition by school type.

Transferring in From a Community College

Starting at a community college is a common, money-saving route into a BSW. In this set, 199 programs name a specific transfer pathway, from formal agreements to published course equivalencies.

School and program Transfer route
University of Arkansas at Little Rock BSW 2+2 agreement: finish the BSW in two years with a two-year degree
Northern Arizona University BSW Up to 75 units from an accredited community college; Arizona transfer block
ASU BSW (Sync online) Built for Arizona community college associate degree graduates
Fresno Pacific University BA Social Work and Human Services AS-T pathway, space available
San Diego State University BASW Articulation with San Diego City College and Cuyamaca College for SW 110 and SW 120
Azusa Pacific University BSW Streamlined path with IGETC or CSU GE breadth
Touro University Worldwide BASW Up to 90 transfer credits; military training evaluated on ACE recommendations

Two cautions apply. First, transfer students usually meet the same bar as everyone else. Arkansas State University states that transfer students meet the same GPA and prerequisite requirements. Second, social work courses from a community college may transfer as electives rather than as the program’s own gateway courses unless an agreement says otherwise, which is why San Diego State’s named articulation for SW 110 and SW 120 is worth noticing.

Use the transfer finder to see which programs in your state publish a pathway, and the degree completion programs page if you already have an associate degree or many credits.

Adults Returning to Finish a Degree

If you work full time or have a family, the format question matters as much as the admission rules. 132 BSW options in this set are offered online, 48 offer a part-time plan, and 18 are degree-completion programs built for students who already hold substantial credit. Aurora University’s online BSW lists a 2-4 year timeline and allows field instruction at approved agencies or the workplace. Ohio State University’s online BSSW estimates about 2 years for a typical student entering with 60 credit hours.

One rule does not bend for experience. CSWE’s accreditation standards say a program does not grant social work course credit for life experience or previous work experience. Years in a case aide or caregiving job will make you a stronger applicant and a better practicum student, but they will not replace a required course. Every accredited BSW also includes at least 400 hours of supervised field education, done in person at an agency, even in an online program.

A Checklist Before You Apply to the Major

Use these points to plan your first two years:

  • Confirm CSWE status. Every program on this site is CSWE-accredited or in candidacy, and a candidacy program is working toward accreditation, not yet accredited. The CSWE-accredited programs list shows each program’s status.
  • Find the credit-hour trigger. Write down the number (45, 48, 54 or 56 at the schools above) and the semester you will reach it.
  • Track two GPAs. Know your overall and social work averages, and which courses count toward each.
  • Plan gateway courses early. Take them in time to apply on schedule, with room to retake one if needed.
  • Get the deadline in writing. Note whether the program admits once a year or every semester.
  • Ask transfer questions before you enroll at a community college. Pick courses listed in an articulation agreement, such as the AS-T pathway Fresno Pacific names.
  • Check aid eligibility. Federal Pell Grants usually go to undergraduates with exceptional financial need who have not earned a bachelor’s degree, so plan your aid before you finish one.

When you are ready to compare specific schools, the program matcher narrows the list by format and state, and each state page, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona and California, lists every BSW program there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Be Rejected From the BSW Major After Getting Into the University?

Yes. Most programs run a separate application to the professional phase of the major. The University of Alabama, Jacksonville State University and the University of South Alabama all admit students to the university first and then review a social work application once you reach a set number of credit hours and a minimum GPA.

Do BSW Programs Give Credit for Work Experience in Human Services?

No. CSWE's 2022 accreditation standards say an accredited program does not grant social work course credit for life experience or previous work experience. Your job history can strengthen your application essay, but you still take every required social work course.

Is a Background Check Required to Enter a BSW Program?

Some programs require one before you enter the major or the field practicum. Oakwood University's formal application includes a background check, NASW membership, liability insurance, a resume, graded papers and peer references.

When Is the Best Time to Apply to the Social Work Major?

Usually in the sophomore year. Tuskegee University asks for the application in the second semester of the sophomore year, Talladega College after the sophomore year, and the University of Alabama after 54 credit hours.

Can You Start a BSW Part Time or Online?

Yes. 48 programs in this set offer a part-time plan and 132 are offered online. The practicum still happens in person at an agency, usually near where you live.

Does Getting Into a BSW Program Require an Interview?

Some do. Tuskegee University requires an orientation and interview, and Talladega College requires a faculty interview, alongside the GPA and course requirements.
