What Can You Do With a BSW? Social Work Careers and Pay
What Can You Do With a BSW?
What can you do with a BSW? You can start right away in child protective services, case management, victim and housing advocacy, community organizing, probation, substance use counseling, aging services and nonprofit management, nine of the twelve careers covered here. Medical and school social work normally need an MSW, which a BSW can shorten through advanced standing, and mental health counseling needs a counseling master's. In 42 of 52 jurisdictions, a BSW also qualifies you for a bachelor's-level social work license; check yours with the BSW license checker.

What Can You Do With a BSW? The Short List
A Bachelor of Social Work prepares you for paid, professional work the day you graduate. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says a BSW is the most common requirement for entry-level nonclinical social worker jobs. That covers most of the public child welfare, case management, advocacy and community roles where social workers start.
What a BSW does not do on its own is qualify you for clinical work: diagnosing mental health conditions or providing therapy. BLS says clinical social workers need a master’s degree, supervised clinical experience and a state license. So the answer to “what can you do with a BSW” splits into three groups:
- Start now: jobs where a BSW is the usual entry degree.
- Start sooner with an MSW: jobs that normally need a Master of Social Work, where a BSW can cut the master’s to about a year through advanced standing.
- Use as preparation: jobs that need a different master’s, such as counseling.
Twelve Careers and the Degree Each One Needs
Here are the twelve careers covered on this site, with the BLS occupation each falls under and that occupation’s national median pay (OEWS, May 2025).

| Mental Health Counselor | Needs a counseling master’s | Substance Abuse, Behavioral Disorder, and Mental Health Counselors | $59,350 |
The pay figure is for the whole BLS occupation, which includes workers at every degree level. A case manager with a BSW and a case aide with a high school diploma are both counted under social and human service assistants.
Jobs You Can Start With a BSW
Child protective services. Public child welfare is a direct route from a BSW into the profession. You investigate reports, assess safety and work with families on case plans. Some programs prepare you for it directly: University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s child welfare students complete the state’s required pre-service training during school and a 400-hour practicum in a North Carolina Department of Social Services agency, so they can start work once hired. Across this site, 94 BSW programs offer a child welfare option and 52 a Title IV-E track; see the child welfare BSW programs.
Case management. You connect clients to housing, benefits, health care and treatment, and track their progress. BLS files most of these jobs under social and human service assistants, where it says a high school diploma is typical. A BSW adds professional social work training to that baseline and also qualifies you for social worker titles, such as child, family and school social worker, an occupation with a $59,550 median.
Advocacy and organizing. Victim advocates support people through the court process and safety planning. Housing advocates help tenants and families facing eviction or homelessness. Community organizers build coalitions around neighborhood issues. All three draw on the macro practice and policy courses in the BSW curriculum.
Probation. BLS says probation officers typically need a bachelor’s degree, and agencies may add competency exams, drug testing and a background check. Social work is a natural fit for the casework side of the job.
Substance use counseling. BLS says substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors typically need a bachelor’s degree, though some positions accept a high school diploma and others require a master’s. Programs such as Elizabeth City State University and Kansas State University offer an addictions track.
Aging services and management. Geriatric social workers help older adults and families plan care, often in health and long-term care settings. Social and community service managers run programs and agencies; BLS says they typically need a bachelor’s degree, often in social work, plus work experience.
Careers That Need an MSW
Medical social work and school social work normally require a Master of Social Work. So does all clinical social work, including the psychiatric, outpatient and private practice jobs that dominate “clinical social worker jobs” searches. BLS says clinical social workers need an MSW, supervised clinical experience after graduation and a passing score on a clinical exam to be licensed.
Your BSW still matters here. BLS notes that some programs let BSW graduates earn the MSW in under two years. Those advanced standing programs skip the generalist first year that your BSW already covered. Of the BSW programs on this site, 323 have a same-school MSW route, so you can often stay at the same university. Read the BSW to MSW guide or check a specific school with the route finder.
Mental health counseling is a separate profession. BLS says mental health counselors typically need a master’s degree and an internship, and counselors in private practice need a license. A BSW is good preparation, but the counseling license comes from a counseling master’s.

Licensed vs Unlicensed BSW Jobs
Whether you need a license as a BSW graduate depends on your state and your job title. In this site’s licensing data, 42 of 52 jurisdictions issue a bachelor’s-level social work license, and 31 of them use the ASWB bachelor’s exam. Titles vary: LBSW, LSW, LSWA, RSW, CSW and others.
Ten jurisdictions issue no bachelor’s-level license: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. If you live in one of them, such as California, Florida or New York, entry-level social service jobs like case management and advocacy don’t depend on a bachelor’s license.
BLS notes that some states require nonclinical social workers to have a license or credential, so in the 42 licensing jurisdictions, check whether the job you want calls for one. The LBSW license guide explains the exam and steps, and the license checker shows your state’s rule.
BSW Salary: What the Pay Data Shows
Pay for BSW graduates depends far more on the occupation and the state than on the degree. Among the careers above, national medians in May 2025 ran from $45,930 for social and human service assistants to $80,390 for social and community service managers. Child, family and school social workers had a median of $59,550, and healthcare social workers $67,880.
Location shifts those numbers a lot. Child, family and school social workers earned a median of $78,970 in Connecticut, the highest state. Healthcare social workers earned $89,660 in California, and probation officers $103,640 in California. Each career page has the full percentile range and top states.

Choosing a BSW for the Career You Want
- Child welfare: look for a Title IV-E track, like those at Albany State University and Salish Kootenai College.
- Health and aging: pick a program with health or aging electives, such as Florida Atlantic University, then plan an MSW for hospital roles.
- Addictions: 26 programs offer an addictions track, and some build in coursework toward a state addiction counselor credential.
- Clinical practice: choose a BSW with a same-school advanced standing MSW so the path to licensure is short.
- Leadership: management roles reward experience, so a strong practicum and first job count as much as the degree.
- Cost: most of these jobs are in public and nonprofit agencies, which can qualify you for Public Service Loan Forgiveness; see the BSW cost guide.
