Graduate Path
BSW to MSW: Advanced Standing and the Fastest Path to a Master's
How Do You Go From a BSW to an MSW, and How Much Time Does Advanced Standing Save?
Going from a BSW to an MSW usually means advanced standing: graduates of a CSWE-accredited BSW skip the MSW's generalist year and finish in about 10 to 12 months full time at many schools, instead of the usual 2 years. 323 BSW schools offer their own advanced standing MSW, and 61 describe a combined BSW-to-MSW track such as a 4+1. Find yours with the BSW to MSW route finder.

BSW to MSW: How Advanced Standing Works
The move from a BSW to an MSW is built around one idea: you shouldn’t repeat what you already learned. A traditional MSW starts with a generalist foundation year that mirrors the BSW curriculum. Advanced standing lets you skip it and start in the specialized year.
The rules come from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). At minimum, advanced standing goes only to graduates of CSWE-accredited bachelor’s social work programs; each MSW program sets its own criteria beyond that. If your BSW program was in candidacy when you started, CSWE treats you as a graduate of an accredited program once it earns initial accreditation.
The time difference is large. BLS reports that MSW programs generally take 2 years, and that some let BSW graduates finish in under 2 years. Among the BSW schools on this site, 323 run their own MSW with advanced standing, and 61 describe a combined BSW-to-MSW track on their BSW pages.
How Much Time and Credit Advanced Standing Takes
Advanced standing programs state their length in credits, months or semesters. Here is how a range of schools describe theirs, quoted from their MSW records:
| BSW school | Advanced standing MSW | How the school states it |
|---|---|---|
| University of North Alabama | Master of Social Work (online) | 30 credit hours, 12 months |
| Oakwood University | Clinical Social Work (online) | 30 credit hours, 1 year or 3 semesters |
| Central Connecticut State University | Trauma-Informed Healthcare MSW | 30 credits |
| California State University-Los Angeles | Advanced Standing Program (Downtown LA) | 33 units (6 summer, 12 fall, 15 spring), 11 months |
| Point Loma Nazarene University | Master of Social Work (hybrid) | 33 credits, 1 year |
| Alabama State University | Master of Social Work | 36 semester hours (Mental Health curriculum guide), 12 months (2 semesters) |
| Metropolitan State University of Denver | Fully online or mixed delivery | 36 credit hours, 1 year full time or 2 years part time |
| Auburn University | Master of Social Work (on campus) | 39 hours, 3 consecutive semesters (1 year) full time; 6 consecutive semesters (2 years) part time |
| Jacksonville State University | Master of Social Work | 39 hours, one calendar year, full time only |
| University of Alabama at Birmingham | Clinical/Medical Social Work | 42 total credit hours, three semesters full time; 2.5 years part time |
| Colorado Mesa University | Master of Social Work: Foundation | 44 credits, 1 year |
| University of Southern California | On campus and hybrid | 24 units, 12 months |
Two patterns stand out. Most full-time advanced standing programs in this list take about one year, and credit loads run from 24 units at USC to 44 credits at Colorado Mesa. Part-time options exist but are less common: Auburn, Metropolitan State University of Denver and UAB each state one.

What the Advanced Year Focuses on
Because you skip the generalist foundation, the advanced year is your specialization, and the program names show what schools build it around. Troy University’s advanced standing MSW is a Direct Practice specialization lasting 1 year. UAB’s is Clinical/Medical Social Work. Central Connecticut State’s is a Trauma-Informed Healthcare MSW, Alabama State’s credit count follows its Mental Health curriculum guide, and Oakwood’s online program is in Clinical Social Work.
Pick the specialization with your target license in mind. If you want to become a clinical social worker, a clinical or mental health concentration lines up with the supervised clinical experience that BLS says clinical licensure requires after the master’s.
Summer Starts and Bridge Courses
Many one-year programs begin in summer, so your MSW can start a few weeks after BSW graduation. The University of Alabama’s advanced standing MSW is 42 credit hours over 1 year (three semesters full time), starting in summer. Arizona State University’s is 39 credit hours in an accelerated one-year format beginning in May: a summer bridge program plus two semesters. San Diego State University’s is 38 units over 1 year, beginning with summer bridge courses, and Cal Poly Humboldt’s is 1 year on campus plus required summer bridge courses.
Plan for this when you apply. With a summer start, the MSW application deadline falls before your BSW graduation, while you are still in your practicum.
Combined BSW-to-MSW Tracks: 4+1, 3+1 and Accelerated Master’s
61 BSW schools describe a combined track that links the two degrees more tightly than standard advanced standing. In the schools’ own words:
- University of Georgia: “MSW Double Dawgs pathway: BSW and Advanced Standing MSW in five years.”
- Saint Mary’s College: “a 3+1 pathway earns the BSW and MSW in four years and a 4+1 pathway is also offered.”
- Dordt University: “earn the bachelor’s in three years and finish Dordt’s MSW in the fourth year.”
- Grand View University: “3+2 program completes the BSW and Grand View MSW in five total years.”
- University of Pikeville: “2+1 for associate degree holders and 4+1 to finish both degrees in five years.”
- Pacific Union College: “apply to Loma Linda University in the junior year to finish an MSW at LLU in one year after the PUC BSW.”
Some schools let you take graduate courses while still an undergraduate, which can lower cost. Indiana University describes an Accelerated Master’s Program that “lets BSW students with a 3.0 GPA take up to 12 MSW credits in their last two semesters at undergraduate tuition.” Wayne State University’s Accelerated Master’s Pathway lets “BSW students with a 3.0 major GPA” apply “around 75 credits and take courses that count toward both degrees at the undergraduate rate.” At the University of Louisville, “strong BSW students may take up to 9 credits that count toward both degrees.”
BSW Schools With Their Own Advanced Standing MSW
323 schools with a CSWE BSW also run an MSW that admits BSW graduates with advanced standing. Advanced standing is open to graduates of any CSWE BSW, not only the school's own.
MSW details from mswdegree.com's verified research of each school's MSW pages, September 2026.
Eligibility Rules as Schools State Them
Beyond CSWE’s floor of an accredited BSW, schools add their own requirements. These are the ones they publish most often:
GPA. Hawaii Pacific University requires “B or higher in social work courses and a 3.0 final GPA” for its 4+1 path, after which students “continue into HPU’s MSW for the remaining 30 credits.” Indiana University and Wayne State both set a 3.0 for their accelerated pathways.
Accreditation of your BSW. Ball State University states that “BSW graduates from CSWE-accredited programs may enter the one-year advanced-standing MSW.” If your BSW program is in candidacy, confirm it reaches accreditation before your MSW start.
Recency of the degree. Ball State notes “no five-year limit” on how recent the BSW must be. That phrasing tells you some programs do set a limit, so check this if you plan to work for a few years first.
Performance, not only completion. Saint Leo University says “students who excel are eligible for advanced standing,” and the University of Alaska Anchorage says BSW graduates “are eligible for the accelerated MSW through advanced standing following a 4+1 program plan.”
Staying at Your BSW School or Moving
With 323 BSW schools offering their own advanced standing MSW, staying put is often an option. Combined tracks such as Georgia’s Double Dawgs pathway and Saint Mary’s 3+1 run within a single school, so they require staying.
Moving can still make sense. If your BSW school’s MSW is campus-only and you need to work, an online advanced standing program may fit better: Oakwood University and Pacific Oaks College each run one, and the University of Alaska Anchorage’s distance-delivered MSW takes as little as 12 months with advanced standing.
Use the route finder to see which BSW programs pair with their own MSW, or browse CSWE-accredited BSW programs with that in mind.
BSW Then MSW, or Another Major Then MSW
You can enter an MSW with a bachelor’s in almost any field, BLS notes. The trade-off is time: without a CSWE-accredited BSW you start the full program, which generally takes 2 years, while advanced standing programs like those above take about one.
Field hours tell the same story. CSWE requires at least 400 field hours in a BSW and at least 900 in an MSW. For advanced standing students, the 900 is measured across both degrees, so your bachelor’s practicum carries forward. A psychology graduate completes all 900 in the MSW.
If you are still choosing a major, the BSW is the faster route to a clinical career. Read the social work degree guide for how the BSW compares with psychology and sociology, and how to become a social worker for the licensing steps.
Licensing on the Way to the MSW
Clinical social workers need a master’s degree, supervised clinical experience and a state license, BLS reports. Your BSW can also earn a license on its own first: 42 of 52 jurisdictions issue a bachelor’s-level credential. Working under an LBSW or similar license while you finish a part-time MSW is one way to pay for school and build experience. The LBSW license guide shows which states offer one.
Planning Your BSW to MSW Route
Work through this checklist in your junior year:
- Confirm your BSW’s CSWE status. Advanced standing depends on it.
- List same-school and nearby MSW options. Note credits, length and whether a summer start is required.
- Check GPA thresholds. Accelerated pathways at Indiana University, Wayne State and Hawaii Pacific set a 3.0.
- Ask about dual-credit courses. Programs like Louisville’s and Wayne State’s count some courses toward both degrees, sometimes at the undergraduate rate.
- Decide on format. Full time takes about a year at most schools listed here; part-time options at Auburn, MSU Denver and UAB run about two years or more.
- Note any time limit on your BSW. If you plan to work first, make sure your degree will still qualify.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Get Advanced Standing With a Psychology Degree?
No. CSWE states that advanced standing is awarded only to graduates of baccalaureate social work programs accredited by CSWE. With a psychology or sociology degree you enter the full MSW, which BLS says generally takes 2 years.
Is Advanced Standing Worth It?
For most BSW graduates, yes: it removes the generalist year you already completed. At the University of North Alabama the advanced standing MSW is 30 credit hours over 12 months; at the University of Southern California it is 24 units over 12 months.
Do You Have to Get Your MSW Right After Your BSW?
No, but some schools limit how recent your BSW must be. Ball State University, for example, states that BSW graduates may enter its one-year advanced standing MSW with no five-year limit, which signals that a time limit is something to check at other programs.
What Is a 4+1 BSW to MSW Program?
A 4+1 lets you finish the BSW in four years and the MSW in one more, usually through advanced standing at the same school. Azusa Pacific describes its Advanced Standing 4+1 as BSW graduates entering the MSW specialized year and finishing in one more year.
Can You Do an Advanced Standing MSW Online?
Yes, at several schools. Oakwood University's online clinical MSW is 30 credit hours over 1 year or 3 semesters, and Pacific Oaks College's online MSW is 35 credits over three full-time semesters of 8-week terms. Field placements are still in person.
Does Advanced Standing Reduce Field Hours?
Your BSW practicum counts toward the total. CSWE requires advanced standing students to complete at least 900 field hours between their bachelor's and master's programs combined.
